Description

Numbers 1-20 on Montpelier Terrace in Ilfracombe is a terrace of 20 houses built around 1835. The houses are raised above road level and constructed of stucco, with most ground floors designed to resemble ashlar stone through channeling. They feature slate roofs with dormers, and No. 12 has a penthouse.

The terrace consists of three storeys, attics, and basements. Nos. 1 and 2 are paired to look like one house, each having a canted bay and a central blind window. Nos. 3, 4, and 20 also have canted bays, while Nos. 5 and 6 each have three windows, and Nos. 7 to 19 have two windows each. The entrance for Nos. 1 and 2 features paired columns that support a pediment, with panelled doors and overlights. No. 3 has a round-arched entrance with a 20th-century door and fanlight. The entrances for Nos. 4 to 8 are adorned with fluted pilasters that support broken pediments, while Nos. 9 to 19 have attached columns supporting triglyph imposts and broken pediments. Fanlights with tracery are present at Nos. 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16 (20th century), and 17. Fluted inner door surrounds can be found at Nos. 8 (which also has a plaster vault in the porch), 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 (original door), 14, 15, 16, and 17. Nos. 18 and 19 have inner doors with sidelights under elliptical heads, while No. 20 has a plain entrance on the right-hand return. All houses except Nos. 5 and 6 feature three-light canted bay windows on the ground floor. Nos. 1-4 and 20 have three-light canted bays with hornless sashes on the first floor. Most other windows are hornless sashes with 15 panes at the first floor, except for No. 7, which has casements with Gothic-shaped heads and overlights featuring V-shaped tracery.

The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace includes continuous cast-iron balconies on the first floors of all houses except Nos. 10, 11, 12, and 15, with Nos. 4 and 19 having plain 20th-century designs, and Nos. 3, 5, 18, and 20 showcasing good design. Nos. 6 and 7 are supported by cast-iron columns. Additionally, there are attached cast-iron railings to the areas with pineapple or fleur-de-lis finials at Nos. 9, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, and 19.
