Description
Coombe House is an early 19th-century farmhouse located in Witheridge. The building is roughcast and whitewashed over a rubble core, featuring wide eaves and a slate roof with three brick ridge stacks. The layout includes an entrance hall, a drawing room on the left, a dining room on the right, and a low service range at a right angle to the rear of the left side, with the kitchen situated to the left of the front.
The exterior stands two storeys tall with a two-to-three bay arrangement. It has original 16-pane sash windows, along with two first-floor windows that have semi-circular heads and Gothick glazing. The main entrance is centrally located within the right three bays, featuring a six-panelled door with the top four panels cut away and glazed, complemented by a flat wooden hood supported by fretwork brackets and a wooden doorcase with pilasters. There is an additional door opening in the left return.
Inside, Coombe House retains many original features, including a striking staircase with turned thin newels, stick balusters, a ramped toadsback handrail, and tread brackets. The doors, architraves, window shutters, and late 19th-century chimneypieces with cast-iron grates are also preserved. The kitchen includes a large open fireplace.
