Description

Wilderscot is a detached house located on Horne Road in Ilfracombe, dating from the early 19th century. It features solid, rendered walls and a hipped roof covered with asbestos slates. A rendered chimney is situated on the right (east) gable wall. The house has a double-fronted plan, likely two rooms deep, with a staircase located at the rear center. It stands two storeys tall with a garret and includes a single-storey structure at the right-hand end.

The front of the house, facing East Wider Brook, has three windows. There is a Doric porch in the center with a six-panelled door. To the left and above the porch are barred sash windows, while to the right is a canted bay window featuring plainer sashes. An added conservatory, likely from the 20th century, is located at the right-hand end.

The rear wall, which faces Horne Road, also has three windows with six-paned sashes, except for a tall middle window that is adorned with coloured, leaded Art Nouveau glass. To the right of this window, under the eaves, is a small, inserted two-light window, each light containing two panes. There are two dormers with curved heads, which are hung with asbestos slates and appear to be from the late 20th century.

Inside, the house features a central stair hall with a dogleg stair and a column newel, along with panelled doors. Wilderscot is depicted on the 1840 tithe map.
