Description
The south boundary wall to Church Hill in Ilfracombe, including gate piers and a Victorian letter box, dates from the mid to late 19th century. The wall is constructed of stone rubble, tapering at the top, with a coping marked by a line of projecting stones, some of which have been replaced with slate. On the outer side facing Church Hill, the wall features pilaster-strips between two sets of gate piers.
The eastern gate piers are made of coursed, squared rubble with caps formed by large, projecting slabs of stone just below the top; the eastern pier has a plain projecting plinth. The western gate piers are built from stone rubble with red brick quoins and have later concrete caps.
To the immediate east of the eastern gate piers, there is an iron letter box set into a cream-colored brick surround. This letter box, likely inserted between 1881 and 1904, features a crown at the top flanked by the letters VR, with a hood above the opening inscribed with "POST OFFICE." The door is plain except for a holder for notices and a somewhat rusted keyhole guard. This letter box was made by WT Allen & Co. of Upper Thames Street, London, and was probably cast at the Sherwood Foundry in Mansfield.
