Description
The Ilfracombe War Memorial commemorates those who died in the 1914-1918 war and was designed in 1924 by Courtney Pollock. It takes the form of a bronze figure of Victory standing upon a plain, Tuscan-columned granite pedestal, which itself sits on a plinth of two wide, shallow granite steps. Inscribed in lead letters on the east side of the pedestal’s base are the words: "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ILFRACOMBE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1918." Bronze plaques on the dado of the pedestal display the names of the deceased on all four sides, while similar plaques on the south, west, and north sides of the base record the names of those who died in the Second World War (1939-1945). The granite work was undertaken by JP Huxtable of Ilfracombe. The memorial was dedicated on Armistice Day, November 11th, 1924, and is situated in the middle of a Garden of Remembrance on a slope east of the churchyard, making it clearly visible from Church Street.
