Description
This 19th-century limekiln is located on the west side of Wood Lane, approximately 100 metres south of the junction with Yellaton Lane. It is constructed from unrendered stone rubble and is built into a bank, featuring a virtually circular plan with a circular well. The kiln has three openings: the left one has a cambered stone arch made of rough stone voussoirs, the front opening is smaller with a straight-headed stone lintel, and the right opening is corbelled. Stone rubble retaining walls extend from each side of the kiln. Combe Martin is noted for having the highest concentration of kilns in North Devon, which are situated in a line near the limestone quarries, running parallel to and southwest of the long village street.
