Description

CHULMLEIGH NEW STREET (west side), SS 6814 - 6914 Chulmleigh 7/86 Green Down GV II

Cottage, Probably C18, but earlier fabric may be concealed, altered and extended in late C20. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Thatch roof with gable ends. Rebuilt brick stack at right gable end. Plan: Single room plan, with blocked doorway which has window inserted to front left-hand side, altered to gable entry at right end in C20. C20 staircase runs up rear wall. The left gable end wall may well have been rebuilt, the cottage probably originally extending to the left, with part of the former walling apparently incorporated in the attached garage. The latter, however, was utilized as a stable within living memory, suggesting the reduction to a single cell plan occured before the beginning of this century. 2 storey C20 extension to rear. Exterior: 2 storeys. 2 light casement 3 panes per light above 2 2-light casements 2 panes per light. Interior: Single unchamfered axial ceiling beam. Roughly chamfered lintel to fireplace which has stone jambs and slightly rounded back of handmade bricks. No bread oven. 2 rough pegged trusses with X apexes and waney purlins resting on backs of principals survive with C20 roof superimposed. Weather-boarded left gable end now concealed by concrete block also suggests considerable rebuilding at this end.
