Description

Green Down is a cottage, probably from the 18th century, although earlier materials may be hidden beneath later alterations. The building has been modified and extended in the late 20th century. It is constructed from rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof featuring gable ends. A rebuilt brick stack is located at the right gable end.

The cottage has a single room plan, with a blocked doorway that has been replaced by a window on the front left side. An entry has been altered to the gable at the right end in the 20th century, and a modern staircase runs up the rear wall. The left gable end wall may have been rebuilt, indicating that the cottage originally extended to the left, with part of the former wall incorporated into the attached garage. This garage was used as a stable within living memory, suggesting that the reduction to a single cell plan occurred before the start of this century. There is also a two-storey extension added to the rear in the 20th century.

The exterior features two storeys, with a two-light casement window with three panes per light above two two-light casements with two panes per light. Inside, there is a single unchamfered axial ceiling beam and a roughly chamfered lintel above the fireplace, which has stone jambs and a slightly rounded back made of handmade bricks. There is no bread oven present. Two rough pegged trusses with X apexes and waney purlins rest on the backs of the principal rafters, with a 20th-century roof built above. The weather-boarded left gable end, now concealed by concrete blocks, also indicates significant rebuilding at that end.
