Description
A small cottage, likely dating from the 18th century, is constructed from painted rendered stone rubble and cob. It has a hipped thatch roof with a plain ridge and a lateral stone rubble stack with a brick shaft on the left side. The cottage is built at a right angle to the street, with a direct entrance into the main heated room, and includes a small scullery to the right of a winder staircase. A 20th-century single-storey kitchen extension with a lean-to roof, incorporating a cob wall that was likely originally an outbuilding, extends at a right angle towards the rear of the left side. The front of the cottage has two storeys, with a single three-light casement window (two panes per light) on each floor, the ground floor window positioned to the left of the 20th-century door. Inside, the rear wall of the front room features raised and fielded dado panelling, and the original fireplace remains intact, although concealed by a 20th-century grate. Otherwise, the 19th-century joinery is entirely original. Investigation of the roof reveals slender principals and hipped ends, confirming the 18th-century date. Attached to the front of the cottage is a cob courtyard wall with corrugated iron capping, extending along the front left side. The property is a notably well-preserved example of a small cottage with a 1½ room plan, located close to the centre of a market town.
