Description

Peel House is a former police station that has been converted into a private dwelling. It dates from the late 19th century and is constructed of painted rendered stone rubble with slate roofs featuring gabled ends. The building has a rendered stack at the left gable end, as well as axial and gable end rendered stacks on the rear wing.

The plan is asymmetrical and L-shaped, with a passage on the right side that runs from the front doorway to the former cells at the rear. To the left of the passage, there are three rooms in line, with the front room being wider than the two rear rooms, which are separated by a staircase. In the 20th century, the two principal rooms at the front were converted into a single large room, and the room between the staircase and former cells was changed from a scullery into a kitchen. The two former cells have been altered into one room that extends the width of the rear wing.

The exterior of the building is two storeys tall and features a large gabled half dormer at the front, which has twin four-paned sash windows above a canted bay window with a hipped slate roof and original diamond glazing pattern. This is located to the left of a segmental pointed arched doorway that has ashlar quoins, a chamfered surround with pyramid stops, and an original studded plank door. There are also two half dormers on the left side of the rear wing. The two right-hand windows retain their original diamond glazing pattern, and two blocked windows that once lit the cells at the rear gable end still have their wrought iron grilles.
