TAWSTOCK SS 52 SE 5/52 Barn and stables approximately 15 - metres south of Fishley Barton Farmhouse

Barn and stables. Barn probably c. 1500, stables C17. Barn of stone rubble, stables largely cob. Continuous corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends. Barn of 7 bays with off-centre opposing cart entrances. Stables rectangular on plan, symmetrical. Barn single storey, stables with loft over. Barn has projecting stone rubble porches to opposing cart entrances. Deeply splayed ventilation slits at each end. Portions of 3 of the 6 original trusses with short curved feet survive, 2 of the trusses retain slightly cranked morticed and tenoned collars with 2 tiers of butt purlins and clasped ridge purlin. The ends of a lower tier of cut away windbracing survive to the front 2 upper end bays. Stables have slatted window openings to each side of loft door over C17 heavy chamfered door surround. Heavy chamfered ceiling beams supporting loft floor.
