Barn And Stables Approximately 15 Metres South Of Fishley Barton Farmhouse

This building consists of a barn and stables located approximately 15 metres south of Fishley Barton Farmhouse. The barn likely dates from around 1500, while the stables are from the 17th century. The barn is constructed of stone rubble, and the stables are mainly made of cob. Both structures have a continuous corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends.

The barn features seven bays and has off-centre opposing cart entrances, along with projecting stone rubble porches at these entrances. There are deeply splayed ventilation slits at each end of the barn. Inside, portions of three of the six original trusses remain, with short curved feet. Two of the trusses have slightly cranked morticed and tenoned collars, supported by two tiers of butt purlins and a clasped ridge purlin. The ends of a lower tier of cut-away windbracing can be seen in the front two upper end bays.

The stables are rectangular in plan and symmetrical, with a loft above. They feature slatted window openings on each side of the loft door, which is framed by a heavy chamfered door surround. The ceiling beams in the stables are also heavy chamfered, supporting the loft floor.
