Description
West Ashford Barton is a house, probably from the 17th century, that was remodeled in the late 19th century, with late 18th century additions to the rear. It is constructed of rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends and 19th century crested ridge tiles. The building has a stack at the right gable end, an off-centre stack at the upper end, and an axial stack. The main range has a three-room and cross-passage plan, with a large L-shaped extension at the rear. It is 1½ storeys high and has a three-window range of half dormers with gabled slate roofs and timber horned sashes, featuring six panes over two panes. There are three French windows with four large panes and marginal glazing bars, along with an additional half-glazed French window at the upper end.
An off-centre slated gabled porch includes front and left side windows of four panes with marginal glazing bars, and a half-glazed panelled inner door with marginal glazing bars. The lower end has panelling, likely from the late 18th century, on all four walls, featuring large bolection moulded panels over smaller dado panels, with corner cabinets and a decorative moulded fireplace with a wrought iron hood. A 17th century plaster cornice survives on one wall of the chamber above the lower end. The roof space is not accessible, but heavy trusses appear to be intact. At the rear, there is a large two-storey extension with slate roofs and slated outshuts in the angle on the east side.
