Description
Upcott House is a country house dating to the mid-18th century, with significant remodelling in the mid-19th century. A rainwater head dated 1752 is present. The house is constructed of rendered brick with a hipped slate roof and stone quoins. It is two storeys high. Courtyard service wings to the rear have been converted into holiday flats.
The main facade has a 2-3-2 bay arrangement, with a two-bay wing added to the left in a matching style. The central three bays are pedimented, and feature a likely later Venetian window in the attic storey, situated above tall, round-headed blank niches flanked by single sash windows. To either side of a later porte-cochere, with a canopy supported by two pairs of Doric columns, are two bays of sash windows. A large, square-headed doorway has a plain fanlight and double, half-glazed doors. The side bays each contain two sash windows on each floor, while the added wing to the left incorporates a side window and a French window. All sashes appear to be timber with glazing bars, arranged in 6 panes per light within reveals. More recently installed protective frames with top ventilators are present on the exterior. A plain deep eaves cornice is surmounted by six vases at the angles. The left end of the house has two timber sash windows on each floor, with a small square window near the top on the left side.
The east side has four timber sashes on each floor to the left, followed by three sashes over a courtyard entrance, with a sash to the left and a cambered arch window with a three-light casement opening to the right. A block to the right features a tripartite window on each floor, with cambered heads and timber sash windows with glazing bars. The courtyard on the west side has three sashes with cambered heads, above two similar openings to the left. Four pilasters flank the north arcade of four Doric columns, and the apartments above have a range of four timber sash windows with glazing bars. A central wooden bell turret features a weathervane.
The interior contains large, plain moulded panelling and a heavy moulded cornice. A bolection chimney-piece is present, with the chimney breast projecting and panelled. An 18th-century staircase, open well, is found in a front room on the east side; it has three balusters per tread, a moulded hand rail ramped up to a square newel, shaped tread ends, and fielded panelling below the dado. Much of the interior was restored after a 20th-century fire.
Despite the replacement of the original windows on the entrance front with secondary protective frames, Upcott House is included on the register as the original sashes appear to remain behind these newer frames.
