Description

Heanton Court Barton is a house that has been converted into a public house and restaurant. It dates from before the 18th century and has been remodeled in the late 18th century, with further alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rubblestone with dressed stone voussoirs and a brick plat-band. It features a mansard slate roof on the central range, which has a large central brick chimney stack, and pyramidal slate roofs on the towers.

The building has a Gothick symmetrical central range that is two stories high and consists of seven bays, flanked by projecting three-stage towers, each two bays wide and topped with embattled parapets. The upper stage windows are sashes with three panes over six panes, horned to the right. The lower storey windows are generally hornless 18th-century sashes with six panes over six panes on the first floor and hornless 20th-century sashes on the ground floor. The windows in the towers are set in deeper reveals.

Doorways have been inserted into the end window openings of the central section, featuring half-glazed doors, with the left door having a three-paned overlight. All window openings have large keystones, except for the centre ground floor window, which has slightly cambered arches. There is a two-storey extension at the rear of the left tower with a slated lean-to roof and a castellated outer wall. Additionally, there is a further two-storey 18th or 19th-century extension at the rear left end of the central section, which has a hipped slate roof, and a single-storey lean-to with a slate roof situated between these two extensions.

The interior has been entirely altered, except for two remaining upper flights of staircase that feature turned balusters and a moulded handrail ramped up to large newels. Original roof timbers are preserved only in the towers. Heanton Court Barton was formerly the seat of the Bassets from the 15th century until 1802 and is situated in an imposing location on the bank of the Taw Estuary.
