Description
Nos. 16 and 16A on Fore Street are two dwellings dating from the 17th century, possibly with an earlier core. They are constructed of plastered cob with stone footings and feature a half-hipped thatched roof. The buildings likely follow a three-room, through-passage plan, with a lower end front wing that creates an overall L-shaped layout. There is a truncated external lateral stack with a bake-oven bulge on the inner face of the wing, and an external rear lateral stack with two slate set-offs and a brick shaft.
The buildings are two-storeys high. The front wing includes a newel stair turret at the end, and there are 19th-century two-light casement windows on this elevation. The main front has a 18th or 19th-century three-light casement window on both the first floor and ground floor, along with a pair of front doors beneath a shaped lintel. There is an additional door to the right. Inside No. 16A, there are two roughly-chamfered cross beams with indeterminate stops, and the roof features straight principals with collars that are lapped and side pegged, marked with carpenter's marks, which is unusual for this type of joint.
