Description

10 and 12 Fore Street is a historic house located on the east side of Fore Street in Silverton. It is part of a row of buildings that were likely constructed together as part of a medieval scheme, dating back to the 15th century or earlier. The structure is made of plastered cob with stone footings and is topped with a thatched roof. It features a three-room, through-passage plan, with the lower end situated to the right of the passage. Both the hall and service room are heated by inserted lateral external front stacks, one of which has two set-offs and both have brick shafts.

The building is two storeys high and has a front with a three-window range. The first floor includes three-light casement windows, two of which have eight leaded panes per light. Number 12 features a 12-light shop window beneath a pentice slate roof, while the ground floor has 19th-century three-light casement windows.

The interior has been described in detail by John R L Thorpe, who noted several significant features that remain intact. These include the remains of two through-passage plank and muntin screens, evidence of jettying of the service end into the hall, an inserted hall fireplace with deep ogee moulding and pyramid stops, and a medieval smoke-blackened roof with jointed crucks, an arched brace over the hall, one of which has a boss carved with vine-leaf decoration, and wind braces. This type of medieval urban terrace development is extremely rare.
