Description
6 Fore Street is a house that is part of a row which may have originally been built in the late medieval period, possibly including Nos. 2 to 12. It dates from the 15th century or earlier but was reconstructed in the 19th century after a fire. The building is made of stone rubble and has a thatched roof.
The layout likely retains some features from its medieval origins, now presenting a two-room plan with a central passage. Each room is heated by a fireplace located in a lateral stack at the back, with an outshut behind the left room.
The exterior is two storeys high with an almost symmetrical three-bay front, completely reconstructed in the 19th century. It features 20th-century three-light casement windows with horizontal glazing bars and a central 20th-century panelled and glazed door. At the rear, the thatch of the main roof extends over a stone outshut on the right, while on the left is a less substantial 20th-century outshut with a corrugated sheet iron lean-to roof.
Inside, the left room has a stone rubble fireplace with a reused moulded timber bressumer, and to the right is a 19th-century boxed-in fireplace with a simple balustrade at the top of the landing. The right-hand room contains a small fireplace with a stop-chamfered timber bressumer. The ceilings have been removed, exposing the joists, and there is a 19th-century four-bay king-post roof structure.
