Description
No. 2 Fore Street is a house that is part of a row, likely built in the late medieval period, possibly around the 15th century or earlier, which includes Nos. 2 to 12. The building is constructed of plastered cob with stone footings and features a thatched roof that is half-hipped at the right end. It is probably a variant of the three-room, cross-passage plan, adapted for a subdivided medieval tenement site. The layout includes a hall and service room facing Fore Street, with a lateral external front stack heating the hall, and an inner room at the rear, which has been rebuilt as another property on School Road.
The house is two storeys high and has a front that features a three-window range. On the first floor, there is one two-light and one three-light casement window, along with a 20th-century two-light window added later. The ground floor has two three-light casement windows. To the left of the stack, there is a recessed doorway with a panelled door, which is accompanied by a pair of set-offs and a brick shaft. There is also a left-hand axial stack from the 19th century. The interior has not been inspected. This building is an interesting example of a late-medieval urban plan type, as discussed by J R L Thorp in his work on hall houses in a late medieval terrace.
