Description

SILVERTON FORE STREET (east side) SS 90 SE Silverton 7/253 - No. 2 5.4.66 GV II*

House forming part of a row that is possibly all of 1 late medieval build which includes Nos. 2 - 12. C15 or earlier. Plastered cob with stone footings. Thatched roof, half-hipped to right-hand end. Probably a variant of the 3-room, cross-passage plan, adapted to fit into sub-divided medieval tenement site, with hall and service room fronting Fore Street, with lateral external front stack heating hall, and inner room to rear (now rebuilt as No. , School Road, q.v.). 2-storeys. Front: 3-window range. One 2, and one 3-light casement window to first floor (with a C20 2-light window added); two 3-light casement windows to ground floor; recessed doorway (with panelled door) set immediately to the left of the stack with has a pair of set offs and a brick shaft; left hand axial stack, C19. Interior not inspected. This is a most interesting example of a late-medieval urban plan type which is discussed by J R L Thorp, "Two Hall Houses in a Late Medieval Terrace: 8-12 Fore Street, Silverton", Proc. Devon Archaeological Societ 40 (1982), 171-80.
