Description
The British Legion Hall, located on Newcourt Road in Silverton, is a building that dates back to 1734 and was originally a charity school. It has undergone significant alterations and expansions over the years. The structure is made of random rubble volcanic trap and features a combination of hipped, half-hipped, and gabled end roofs.
The front of the building, facing Newcourt Road, consists of two single-storey schoolroom blocks. The left block has two 2-light casement windows on the first floor and a blocked door below. Between this block and the gable end of the adjacent block, there is now a brick chimney. The gable end of the older block features a 4-light window with a transom, positioned beneath a plaque that commemorates the founding of the charity school by John Richards.
On the Exeter Road side, there are two 4-light windows with transoms and one 2-light window beneath a damaged hood mould. The 4-light windows are set in very shallow recesses. The building also has an axial bellcote, although it is currently without a bell. There are later additions to the rear of the hall. The British Legion Hall holds group value as it occupies an important central position in the village.
