Description

No. 8, Fore Street is a house, likely built in the 15th century or early 16th century, with a later, or rebuilt, rear wing, possibly dating to the late 16th century. It forms part of a row and is thought to have been built together with numbers 6 to 12 as part of an original medieval scheme, possibly with numbers 2 to 12 constructed concurrently. The house is built of plastered cob with stone footings, and has a thatched roof.

The original three-room, cross-passage plan has been altered to fit the constrained site of a subdivided medieval tenement. The hall and service area face Fore Street and are divided by a passage, with the inner room at the rear. The house is two storeys high, with a two-window front. A front external lateral stack, with slated set-offs, heats the hall. It has horned sash windows to both the first and ground floors, a front door, and garage doors that lead into what was formerly the service room.

The interior, as described by J R L Thorp in 'Two Hall House in Late Medieval Terrace: 8-12 Fore Street, Silverton,' features a passage plank and muntin screen, an ovolo moulded hall fireplace, a studded partition in the rear wing, and three jointed cruck roof trusses—one with an arched brace—along with heavily sooted roofs and wind braces. This type of medieval urban terrace development is exceptionally rare.
