Description
The Periom headstone, dated 1769, is located approximately 5 metres south-west of Prestcott Baptist Chapel. This Grade II listed headstone commemorates William Periom and is made of hamstone. It features an upright slab that stands about 1.1 metres high, with a shaped top that is intricately carved with a vase and hourglass, flanked by winged cherub heads. The inscription is surrounded by carved scrolls and foliage. The first word of the inscription is in Gothic lettering, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of William Periom in 1769. This non-conformist memorial is notably early and ornate for Devon.
