Description
Culliford Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th or 17th century, which was modernised in the early 20th century. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble, likely with cob, and features stone rubble stacks topped with early 20th century brick. The roof is slate, having originally been thatch.
The house has a three-room-and-through-passage plan and faces south-south-west. At the left (west) end is an inner room parlour that is heated by a gable-end stack. The hall has a projecting rear lateral stack, which is now disused, and the right (east) end room serves as a kitchen with a large projecting gable-end stack. Although an internal inspection was not possible during the survey, the layout from the 16th or 17th century appears to be well-preserved, suggesting that the original farmhouse may have been an open hall house, possibly heated by an open hearth fire.
The house is now two storeys high, with secondary service outshots across the rear, including a two-storey structure behind the kitchen. The exterior features an irregular three-window front with early 20th century casements, the latest of which lacks glazing bars. The passage front doorway is located to the right of centre and contains an early 20th century part-glazed and panelled door, sheltered by a 20th century gabled porch. The roof is gable-ended.
Interior details were not available for inspection, but two axial beams with broad soffit chamfers from the early or mid-17th century were observed in the kitchen. The original layout seems to be largely intact, and the house may contain significant 16th or 17th century carpentry details, potentially including a late medieval roof structure.
