Description
Earlsland is a detached house dating from the early 19th century, with later additions. Originally constructed of cob with a stone plinth, it has plastered gable ends and a slate roof. The plan was initially based around a central staircase, although the rear of the house, which fronts onto West End Road and includes the kitchen, may incorporate an earlier structure. The house features two end stacks and one axial stack, all with brick shafts.
The front elevation originally presented a symmetrical three-window arrangement, characterised by deeply overhanging eaves with a gutter box supported by small brackets. A central portico with Tuscan columns and pilasters provides access to a glazed and panelled front door, which is surmounted by a semi-circular fanlight and panelled reveals. The upper windows are hornless sashes with eight panes per sash, similar to those on the ground floor, though the upper sashes have eight panes and the lower sashes have twelve. Two additional bays have been added to the right-hand side of the front elevation, featuring hornless sash windows above with two panes per sash and margin panes, and more recent 20th-century aluminium-framed windows on the ground floor. The rear elevation, facing the road, displays asymmetrical 19th-century fenestration.
The interior is largely contemporary and retains original features, including panelled doors and a staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed handrail.
