Description
Two houses, formerly one dwelling, were built in the late 16th or 17th century and altered later. They are constructed of cob with a stone plinth, plastered walls, and have a rear stone wing, all under a hipped and gabled-end slate roof. Originally, the building was a three-room, through-passage house aligned along the street, with a rear wing to the right, creating an L-shaped plan. An internal end stack is located to the right. The houses are two storeys high. The front elevation has a four-window range; three upper windows have 20th-century pivoted sash windows with glazing bars, and one is a two-light casement. On the ground floor are two 20th-century windows with pivoting sashes and glazing bars, and a doorway leading to number 26 (to the left). Number 28 features a doorway sheltered by a moulded canopy on shaped brackets, and a two-light casement window to the right. The right-hand elevation and rear have 20th-century casement windows. Inside, a plank and muntin screen is visible on the rear wall of the inner room; it is chamfered with hollow step stops 18 inches above the floor level, although it now sits on a concrete plinth and its original location may be uncertain. A doorway from the passage into the inner room has a chamfered lintel and jambs, with a tiled door featuring two fielded panels. The roof retains two trusses with slender scantling, collars, and side-pegged joints, although the apex carpentry is missing.
