Description

A detached house located in Bradninch, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries. The front of the house is built of cob with a stone plinth and plastered surfaces; the rear is red brick. All elevations are covered by a gabled slate roof. The original part of the house, which retains early 18th-century roof trusses, forms the front of a double-depth plan, and was extended to the rear in the later 19th century. The house is two storeys in height, with two end stacks and a further stack projecting from the right-hand end of the front roof slope, all featuring brick shafts. The symmetrical front facade, facing the street, has a five-window range (with a single-storey windowless extension to the right). A central doorway is topped by a moulded canopy supported on shaped brackets; the doorway itself has a moulded architrave and a door with depressed panels, planking, strap hinges with fleur de lis finials. Six-pane hornless sash windows with wooden surrounds are present. To the rear, a symmetrical two-window range features two-pane horned sash windows, and has a lean-to conservatory along its full length. Deep overhanging eaves are supported by shaped brackets. A single 2-light casement window, with eight panes per light, is located at the left-hand end of the original section of the house. The interior includes a good 19th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters. The roof combines six original trusses, set closely together; some are morticed and side pegged at the apex, while others are halved and pegged. These original trusses are overlaid by a later 19th-century roof structure.
