Description

27 Fore Street is a large house located on the west side of Fore Street in Silverton. It dates from the 18th century or early 19th century, with some visible features from the 17th century in the rear wing. The building is likely constructed of plastered cob with stone footings and has a hipped thatched roof. The layout follows a three-room through-passage plan, suggesting it may be an 18th-century remodelling of an older structure.

The house is two storeys tall with attic dormers and features a right-hand end stack and an internal rear lateral stack with a brick shaft. The front facade has an eight-window range. The first-floor windows are all 19th-century, consisting of two lights with ten leaded panes per light. The ground floor includes a main porch to the right of center, supported by reeded pilasters and topped with a moulded cornice. To the left, there is a late 19th-century entrance with a moulded canopy on shaped brackets, which extends to form the lintel of adjacent windows. There are five other early 19th-century windows on the ground floor, each with two lights and margin panes. The left-hand end features one two-light window on each floor, while the rear wing has a three-light ovolo-moulded window.

Inside, the interior is primarily from the 19th century, including a well stair and some joinery. The roof trusses are positioned low in the walls, and the apex carpentry is not visible. It is possible that the roof dates back to the late 17th century.
