Description

No. 5 High Street is a shop with accommodation above, likely originating from the mid-18th century, although the front was remodeled in the late 19th century. The building features Flemish bond brickwork, a slate roof, and a brick chimney stack. It has an L-shaped plan, with the shop located in the main block and a cart entrance on the left that leads into a narrow court known as Fountain Court.

The exterior consists of three storeys with a symmetrical two-bay front. It has deep eaves with a boxed eaves cornice and a band of 20th-century cement render below. The shop front, which dates from the late 19th or early 20th century, projects and includes canted windows, with a central door that has a low panel and a plain glazed overlight. The large plate glass shop windows are single-pane and framed with moulded sills. Above, the first floor features two tall canted bay windows from the late 19th century, each with projecting moulded cornices supported by curved brackets. The windows are fitted with 2-pane casements beneath the transom, along with two first-floor 3/3-pane sash windows.

Access to the accommodation is provided through a 19th-century panelled door located at the back of the building, facing Fountain Court. The end-gabled rear wing has a lower pantile roof and is likely constructed of cob. The interior has not been inspected.
