CHERITON FITZPAINE CHERITON FITZPAINE SS 80 NE 7/22 - Hayes Cottage & Katherine Cottage GV II

2 cottages. Probably C18, Hayes Cottage renovated circa 1850 and Katherine Cottage rebuilt circa 1970. Plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatched roof. L-shaped building with long main block facing south-west with short wing projecting forward from left (north-west) end. It contains two 3-room cottages, Hayes to the left and Katherine to right. Hayes has rear lateral stack and outer lateral stack to wing. Katherine has axial stack. Overall 6-window front with 7th to front of wing. Hayes has late C19 casements with glazing bars and door in angle of wings under C20 pantile roofed porch. Katherine has late C19 and C20 copy casements with glazing bars and first floor window over door has leaded glass and iron casement. Door has C20 porch. Roof hipped both ends. Interior of Hayes shows some plain carpentry detail. Roof of elm A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. Interior of Katherine mostly replaced circa 1970 when C17 beams and lintels introduced; said to have been salvaged from Coddiford Mill.
