Description

Hayes Cottage and Katherine Cottage are two cottages located in Cheriton Fitzpaine, likely built in the 18th century. Hayes Cottage was renovated around 1850, while Katherine Cottage was rebuilt around 1970. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped with 20th-century brick and a thatched roof. The building is L-shaped, featuring a long main block facing southwest and a short wing that projects forward from the left (northwest) end.

Hayes Cottage is on the left and has a rear lateral stack and an outer lateral stack on the wing. Katherine Cottage is on the right and has an axial stack. The overall facade has six windows, with a seventh window on the front of the wing. Hayes Cottage features late 19th-century casements with glazing bars, and a door located in the angle of the wings under a 20th-century pantile-roofed porch. Katherine Cottage has late 19th-century and 20th-century replica casements with glazing bars, and the first-floor window above the door has leaded glass and an iron casement. The door is also sheltered by a 20th-century porch. The roof is hipped at both ends.

Inside Hayes Cottage, there are some plain carpentry details, and the roof consists of elm A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars. The interior of Katherine Cottage was mostly replaced around 1970, when 17th-century beams and lintels were introduced, reportedly salvaged from Coddiford Mill.
