Description

Haydon’s Cottage is a detached cottage dating to the late 16th century. It’s built of roughcast cob resting on stone footings, with a thatched roof that is half-hipped. Originally a small three-room plan house, its original entrances are uncertain and it’s possible it once had a baffle entrance. Each room originally consisted of a single bay. An axial stack with a brick shaft heats both the hall and the service end of the cottage; the inner room remains unheated. A 19th-century staircase is located to the rear of the stack. Later extensions were added to both the left and right-hand ends. The cottage is two stories high. The front elevation has an irregular three-window range, all with 20th-century metal casements. The present entrance is located in the kitchen, which is the service end of the cottage on the right. There are no windows to the rear, as the cottage is built into a bank. Inside, each room has a ceiling with cross beams, chamfered with large step stops. The inner room is covered by a single jointed cruck, halved at the apex with trenched purlins; the other principals are straight, and the apex carpentry isn't visible.
