Description

A pair of cottages, originally a single dwelling, dates back to the 17th century with later alterations. The walls are roughcast cob construction sitting on stone footings, and the roof is thatched and hipped. The building likely began as a two-room, possibly three-room, through-passage house. An axial stack heated the right-hand room, with a former newel staircase located to the rear. The left-hand, or service, room was heated by a rear lateral external stack, featuring off-sets. The cottages are two storeys high. The front elevation has a four-window range, with two two-light and two single-light casement windows on the first floor, likely dating to the 19th century. A blocked door is present, possibly opposite a rear door to the second cottage. Below are four four-light casement windows, also from the 19th century, three featuring external shutters, and a single-light window added in the 20th century. At the rear, late 20th-century slated brick lean-tos have been added. A small two-light window likely indicates the location of the stairs; another, larger two-light casement window is also present. The interior of the cottages has not been inspected.
