Description
The Church Room, also known as the Vestry Room, is a church or vestry room that was formerly part of a dwelling. It likely dates back to the 16th century or earlier and was refurbished in the early 19th century, with later modifications. The building is constructed of plastered cob on stone footings and features a gabled-end concrete tiled roof. Old photographs indicate that it was once part of a larger structure, possibly the service end of a three-room, cross-passage house, although it is situated physically higher than the now-demolished hall and inner room.
This single-storey building has a front that includes two round-headed 24-pane hornless sash windows and a round-headed doorway to the left, with the door being from the late 20th century and a fanlight featuring glazing bars. There are three buttresses on the front, and a right-hand end stack with a renewed brick shaft. Inside, a false ceiling obscures the roof structure, which may be ancient. The church room is located on a prominent central site in the village.
