Description

April Cottage, Bawn Cottage, and Rose Cottage are a row of three adjoining cottages located in Cheriton Fitzpaine, dating from the late 17th century and extended in the 19th century. They are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob or rubble stacks that are topped with 19th and 20th-century brick. The cottages originally had thatched roofs, but Rose Cottage has been replaced with slate.

The cottages are arranged with Rose Cottage at the left (north) end, April Cottage in the center, and Bawn Cottage at the right (south) end. Bawn Cottage was extended in the 19th century to include one room. They share stacks against the rear wall and are two storeys high. The front elevation features a regular arrangement of seven windows, which include a mix of late 19th and 20th-century casements, most with glazing bars, as well as a 12-pane ground floor sash window in Rose Cottage. The doors are located behind 20th-century porches. The first-floor windows of April and Bawn Cottages have thatched eyebrows above them, and the roof is hipped at both ends.

Inside, Rose Cottage has a chamfered axial beam with straight cut stops, a diagonal corner fireplace with a plain oak lintel, and a curving pentan. April Cottage features a blocked diagonal corner fireplace and a plain chamfered crossbeam. The interior of Bawn Cottage has not been inspected.
