Description

The Ring O'Bells Public House is a public house that was originally a house, dating from the 17th century with alterations from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with rubble stacks topped by 19th and 20th-century brick, and features a thatched roof. This attractive, long, rambling building has a five-room plan facing east, with the right (southern) side now serving as the main area. Three of the rooms function as bars, while the remaining rooms are for domestic accommodation. The interior layout has been significantly altered in the 20th century. There is an axial stack located to the right of the center and a projecting front lateral stack with an oven projection to the left of the center. The building has two storeys and an irregular six-window front featuring late 19th and 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The doors are from the 20th century, with the main door situated to the left of the stack and a 20th-century porch. The left end of the building is slightly recessed from the main front, likely indicating a later addition. The right end corner is cut off, with a 20th-century casement above a door. The roof is hipped to the right and gable-ended to the left. The interior has been much altered, with fireplaces that are either blocked or rebuilt in the 20th century. The carpentry detail is plain, but one 17th-century chamfered and late step-stopped crossbeam is exposed. A large square-sectioned beam in the center right room is a 20th-century insert. The roof has not been inspected.
