Description
The Old Brewery is a former brewery built by William Furze in 1858, now serving various community and business purposes. It features red brick construction on a stone plinth, with a slate roof that is concealed by a parapet. The building occupies a corner site between High Street and East Street, taking advantage of the slope of the land. It stands four storeys tall.
The front elevation facing High Street has a regular arrangement of nine windows, each being round-headed and consisting of two lights across all floors, separated by plain bands. Some of these windows are blocked, and a 20th-century entrance has been added. The corner of the building is polygonal, with a similar round-headed two-light window on each side; the top tier of windows here is also blocked. A date stone indicating 'Built W.A.D.F. 1858' is set high under a parapet stringcourse supported by shaped brackets.
The south elevation mirrors the High Street front with nine bays but includes a basement and several late 20th-century alterations. The Old Brewery is a notable landmark in Uffculme, visible from The Mount, the brewer's house located slightly to the north.
