Description

The Shambles is a public seating structure, likely dating to the 17th century or even earlier, although significantly renewed and altered in the 19th century. It is an open timber structure with a gable-ended slate roof. The structure features end posts with tie beams supported by curved braces, pegged and bolted together. Decorative 19th-century bargeboarding, apex pinnacles, and pendants are present. Originally containing a timber counter, it now features a double wooden seat. The structure’s design is comparable to The Shambles in Shepton Mallet, which Pevsner dates to the 15th century. Uffculme's woollen industry was prominent in the 16th century, reaching its peak in the mid-18th century, and it is possible the structure dates from within this period; however, its use for dealing in wool or cloth is uncertain.
