Description
The Baptist Chapel in Uffculme was built in 1809 and enlarged in 1884, according to Kelly's Directory. It is constructed of random rubble limestone with some volcanic trap, featuring brick window surrounds. The chapel has a gable end slate roof adorned with crested ridge tiles, an apex finial, and two small ridge ventilators. The building has a simple rectangular plan with a gallery at the front end. The 1884 extension at the rear is clearly marked by vertical masonry joints, distinguishing it from the original structure.
The front exterior is rendered and includes pilaster quoins with moulded capitals, an eaves fascia, and a plat-band that together create a sort of pediment. There are two tiers of two round-headed, two-light windows on the ground floor, which are taller and flank a recessed door that is topped by a quatrefoil set in a roundel. On either side of the chapel, there are two window bays, all featuring two-light round-headed windows. The first floor of the extension has smaller two-light windows and a door on the north side. The rear elevation includes two pointed lancets with Y-tracery and late 19th-century patterned glass.
