Description
This is a headstone located approximately 13 metres east-south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Down St Mary. It is probably from the late 18th century and commemorates Elizabeth Hound. The headstone is made of granite and stands about 0.8 metres high. It features a segmental head and shoulders low nowy head. An incised line frames the rectangular plaque, which is inscribed with both upper and lower case letters, though the weathered lettering is now barely legible. The inscription notes the burial of Elizabeth, the wife of William Hound, along with the date of her burial. At the top of the headstone is a recessed panel that contains a bas-relief carving of a cherub surrounded by flowers.
