Description
This is a headstone dated 1791, located approximately 22 metres north-east of the chancel of the Church of St Mary in Aylesbeare. It commemorates Mary Newbury and is made of limestone. The upright slab stands about 1.3 metres high and features a low segmental head with concave corners. The frame is designed as a low relief architectural arch supported by fluted columns with plain caps. The round arched head includes a biblical quotation, and the keystone is intricately carved to resemble a skull. The inscription, presented in upper and lower case Roman serif lettering, notes the death of Mary Newbury in 1791. It is important to note that this headstone has been repositioned.
