Description

Bramble Cottage, also known as Number 1 Davids Land Cottages, is a house that was originally two cottages built in the 17th century. It was modernised and extended around 1970. The building features plastered cob on rubble footings, with a cob stack topped by 18th-century brick and a roof covered in interlocking concrete tiles, which replaced the original thatch.

Originally, the structure consisted of two one-room plan cottages facing south, with a central axial stack that served back-to-back fireplaces located at the rear of the ridge. There are outshots to the rear that may be original, and a 20th-century extension has been added to the right (east) end. The adjoining property, Number 2 Davids Land Cottages, is located to the right.

The house is two storeys tall and has a regular four-window front, featuring a mix of 20th-century casements, most of which have glazing bars. The left ground floor window blocks the former door to the left cottage. At the right end, there is an original doorway concealed behind a 20th-century porch with a monopitch and corrugated plastic roof. A single-storey 20th-century extension projects slightly forward on the right side and includes one front window. Both the main roof and the extension roof are gable-ended, and the chimney shaft is made of 18th-century handmade brick.

Inside, both rooms have plain soffit-chamfered crossbeams, and the oak lintels over the fireplaces are hidden. Each former cottage features a 17th-century A-frame roof with pegged lap-jointed collars and shaped halvings.
