Description
The Village Hall, formerly a school, dates from around 1880. It is constructed from snecked volcanic stone, featuring volcanic ashlar quoins and Bathstone detailing, topped with a red tile roof that has both plain and crested ridge tiles. The building has an open hall with its southern gable end facing the village green. On the left side, there are 20th-century service rooms, while the original entrance porch is located on the right side. The main block has tall gables and a continuous low moulded dripmould around the building, with the lower section of the wall slightly battered.
The south front showcases a main window consisting of three trefoil-headed lancets, with the central lancet taller than the outer ones, all set under the same relieving arch. Above this, near the top of the gable, is an oculus window featuring a quatrefoil. Each gable is topped with plain coping. The right (east) side includes a three-light square-headed stone window with chamfered mullions. There is an entrance porch at the rear under a monopitch roof. The outer side has a range of timber windows with heavy mullions, and at the front end is a two-centred arched doorway. The rear gable end has a window made up of three trefoil-headed lancets of equal height, along with a ventilator near the top of the gable. The interior has not been inspected. The old school appears to be part of the architectural scheme for the village centre by the Reverend W T A Radford.
