Description
This is a barn with an engine house located 40 metres south-west of Great Pit Farmhouse, dating from the 17th and 19th centuries. It features a cob stone plinth, with significant areas of brick and some breezeblock patching. The roof is gabled, covered with pantiles and corrugated iron. The barn is a long structure that reflects two main building periods; the older section is closest to the farmhouse and has external steps leading to the upper floor at the north end. There is a 3-light unchamfered window facing the farmyard. Inside, it has 2 (possibly 3) jointed crucks that are morticed and pegged at the apex, although the collars are no longer present and there is much later reinforcement. The southern section of the barn has opposed wagon entrances, two doorways, and a loft entrance, with weatherboarding at the rear. The projecting engine house has a polygonal hipped roof that remains intact.
