Description
Arden House is a detached cottage, possibly dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of roughcast cob with stone footings and features a gabled-end thatched roof. The building is a simple two-celled dwelling with a corner stack, situated on a corner site, and includes a rear wing that runs along King Street. It has two storeys.
The front elevation facing King Street shows a recessed wing with two first-floor windows, one of which is beneath a shallow eyebrow eaves. To the right of the door, there are two ground-floor windows. The older range has two two-light windows, with a three-light window above. The eaves line is steep and irregular, meeting the corner internal stack, which has brick shafts. The elevation facing Tiverton Road features a small window at eaves level, a three-light window below, and a tiny fire window to the right. All the casements are 20th century, but the embrasures appear to be older.
Inside, there are some chamfered beams that are unstopped, and one truss that is partially visible in the upper room may be a jointed cruck. The roof space has not been inspected.
