Description
Fernside is a house dating from the 18th century, constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks featuring 19th century brick chimney shafts and a thatched roof. This two-room cottage has a central through-passage plan and faces south-west. The left passage partition was removed in this century. It has end stacks and is two storeys high, with an almost symmetrical three-window front that includes 20th century casements with glazing bars, most of which are copies of 19th century designs. The central doorway features a 20th century glass door and a 20th century hood with a corrugated plastic roof supported on raking struts. A plaque from the West of England Insurance Company is set high in the wall between the central and left-hand first floor windows. The roof is hipped at both ends. Inside, both ground floor rooms have plain chamfered cross beams and a blocked fireplace. The roof has not been inspected.
