Description
The store located about 12 metres south west of Slade Farmhouse is a building that originated as part of a late 16th to early 17th century house. It was reduced in size and height for use as a store in the late 19th to early 20th century. The structure is constructed from a mix of materials, including partly cob on rubble footings, partly rubble, and partly volcanic ashlar, with a volcanic ashlar stack and a corrugated iron roof.
Currently, it is a single-storey, one-room store facing south, but it was originally a room from a high-quality two-storey house. The west end features a disused stack and a disused circular newel turret that projects from the south west corner. The south front has an original ovolo-moulded doorframe at the right end, which includes a contemporary plank door hung on strap hinges with fleur-de-lys finials. The west side is made of volcanic ashlar with a chamfered plinth and includes a window aperture that contains an early 20th-century frame. The other two sides are blind cob walls, with the eastern side likely being a secondary rebuild, suggesting that the building may have originally extended further in that direction.
The roof is a 20th-century monopitch design. The interior remains unaltered, featuring a chamfered oak lintel over a stone fireplace with step stops, and the cross and two half beams have double-ovolo mouldings and facetted step stops. The joists are scratch-moulded. This building is included for its group value.
