Description
Southcott Cottages are two cottages that were originally one farmhouse, likely dating from the 16th century with improvements made in the 17th century. The cottages are constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks that have been topped with 19th and 20th-century brick, and they have a corrugated asbestos roof that was formerly thatch. The original layout was a three-room-and-through-passage plan, facing east, with a former service room at the right (south) end. A 17th-century dairy and stair wing were probably added at right angles to the rear of the hall and inner room. There is a large axial hall stack backing onto the passage and a later 20th-century axial stack inserted at the inner room end. The left cottage occupies the former inner room and the dairy/stair annexe, while the right cottage includes the former hall, passage, and service room. The building is two storeys high and features a five-window front with various sizes and irregular arrangements, consisting of 19th and 20th-century casements, all with glazing bars. The central pair of first-floor casements, both with three lights, contain 19th-century glass. The left cottage has an inserted door, while the right cottage has a 20th-century door leading into the hall and a former passage door that has been blocked to the right. The interior was not available for inspection at the time of the survey, but it is known to include features from the 16th and 17th centuries.
