Description

Lower King's Mill Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and extensions from the 19th century. It is constructed of stone with some brick patching and roughcast, topped by a gabled-end slate roof. The building now functions as a two-room cross passage house, although it is possible that a third room was either removed or incorporated into the adjoining Lower King's Mill House.

The cottage features a left-hand end stack with a plastered brick shaft and a 19th-century rear end stack that emerges from an outshut with a catslide roof. It stands two storeys tall and has a front elevation with a two-window range. The first-floor windows each consist of five lights under a hood mould, with keeled mullions; the left-hand window has stone mullions, while the right-hand window has timber mullions. There is also a tiny pointed window, which is not visible from the outside, at the extreme left.

On the ground floor, there are four-light casement windows under hood moulds on either side of an open timber porch, which is covered by a slate gabled-end roof. Additionally, there is a two-light casement window on the left-hand side of the outshut and in a separately gabled 19th-century rear extension. The rear of the cottage features 19th-century casement windows.

Inside, the left-hand room has a cross beam that is chamfered with hollow step stops, while the right-hand room has a chamfered, unstopped cross beam. It is believed that panelling of unknown date may be concealed in the upper left-hand room. The roof structure is entirely from the mid-19th century.
