Description
Trott's Almshouses is a row of almshouses founded in 1522 by John Trott for six poor men, built in 1523 and significantly restored in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The structure features random rubble volcanic trap stone and sandstone walls topped with a gabled-end slate roof. It consists of six two-storey units, each with one room per floor, accessed from the rear. The main central entrance, which is now blocked, originally opened onto Higher Street. The building has two end chimney stacks and three axial chimney stacks, all with brick shafts.
The exterior has two storeys and a seven-window range at the front. The first floor includes one, two, and three-light barred 19th-century casement windows, while the ground floor features six two-light windows and some 20th-century one-light casements. The blocked central doorway has a segmental-headed, moulded arch within a square-headed surround, adorned with foliate spandrels. At the rear, there are six doors and six two-light windows on the ground floor, mostly dating from the 20th century with concrete sills, and six three-light casement windows from the 19th century on the first floor.
Inside, all units have cross beams with roll and concave moulding and oak-leaf stops.
