Description
1 Fore Street is a building of probable 17th-century origins, but largely dating from the early 19th century, and originally part of a coaching inn. It has been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a slate tile roof. Brick chimneys rise from the ridge and at a truncated gable end.
The building has a single main range, arranged as five bays over two storeys. A carriage entrance on the left (north) side provides access to a rear range. The front door is central, consisting of six panels, with a semi-circular fanlight above. It is framed by panelled surrounds, including pilasters with modillion detailing supporting the capitals and an open triangular pediment. The ground floor has three six-over-six sash windows, each with a keystone above. The first floor features four similar windows, also six-over-six, with keystones that repeat the detail below. Above the carriage entrance is a semi-circular headed sash window within a moulded architrave, and to the side is a decorative wrought iron bracket for a former pub sign. A six-over-six sash window with a segmental head is located on the rear elevation, above the carriage entrance, and a semi-circular headed stair window is also on the rear of the principal range.
The rear range extends eastward.
