Description

21 Fore Street is possibly part of a former 18th-century coaching inn, featuring a principal elevation and ground-floor shopfront from the mid- to late-19th century, along with later alterations.

The building is constructed with applied timber-framing on the first floor. Its pitched roof is covered in slate tiles with crested ridge tiles, and there is an axial chimney stack with a rendered brick shaft.

The exterior consists of two storeys. The ground floor includes a carriage entrance on the left and a mid- to late-19th-century shop front on the right. This shop front has a central recessed lobby entrance flanked by curved display windows featuring medium-sized panes of plate glass divided by glazing bars, with panelled stall risers below. Panelled pilasters support the fascia and cornice above, which includes three panels for signage.

On the first floor, there are three tiers of applied timber framing, with the lower tier displaying trefoil-headed arches. The Venetian-style oriel window on the left has three lights facing the front and one on each side, with square leaded lights above that incorporate coloured glass. This window rests on a stone corbel that serves as the keystone for the lintel, with scalloped clay tiles above the carriage entrance. The right-hand oriel window features two lights facing the front, single lights on the canted sides, and segmental-headed leaded lights above with coloured glass. The gable on the left has scalloped tiles, while the right gable includes a trefoil-headed, slatted ventilator; both gables are adorned with barge boards, pendants, and finials.
