Description
24 and 24a Fore Street is a former inn built in the early 19th century, with possible origins dating back to the 17th century. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries.
Constructed from cob, Culm sandstone, and brick, the principal elevation is finished with stucco. The roof is covered in slate tiles with clay ridge tiles.
The building stands two storeys high with attic accommodation. Its three-bay symmetrical façade features rusticated quoins, a moulded string course, and a moulded cornice supported by four decorative corbels. The central bay on the ground floor has a 20th-century door set within a doorcase of fluted pilasters that support a triangular pediment rising above the string course. The outer bays contain 20th-century plate-glass display windows with incised voussoirs above the lintels. On the first floor, the central three-over-three horned sash window is flanked by six-light windows that have heavily moulded mullions and transoms, with a round head on the central upper light. These three windows are adorned with moulded eared architraves, and the outer windowsills are supported on corbels. The attic features three raking dormer windows, each with two-over-two sash windows and reeded jambs. Rendered gable end chimney stacks complete the exterior.
The side elevation is made of brick laid in Flemish bond, accented with rubbed brick dressings. An original doorway has been blocked, and a new door has been inserted to the left in the position of a former window.
The south elevation of the rear range consists of six bays. The ground floor is constructed of rubble stone with some brick infill, featuring segmental arch heads above the altered window and door openings. The first floor is built of brick laid in stretcher bond, with six two-over-two horned sash windows beneath cambered brick heads.
Inside, the ground floor boasts a panelled ceiling with intersecting beams and triple roll moulding that forms four square panels.
