Description

39 Fore Street is an early 19th-century dwelling with commercial premises on the ground floor, situated within a continuous row of buildings. It likely incorporates earlier fabric. The front elevation has been plastered, topped by a slate roof and featuring a brick stack at the right-hand end.

The building is two storeys high with a two-window arrangement to the front. The upper floor features two two-pane sash windows with a decorative border of small panes of glass (margin panes) and a moulded gutter box running along the eaves. The ground floor presents an Edwardian shop front with a recessed central entrance and large plate glass windows, each side featuring raised platforms (stall risers). Fluted and panelled pilasters flank the shop front, rising to bracket supports with small triangular pediments positioned above the fascia and moulded cornice. Thin, curved columns frame the corners of the right-hand shop front and a slender mullion runs centrally. A fluted and panelled pilaster is also present on the left-hand corner of the shop front, adjacent to the recessed entrance, which is paved with terrazzo.
